Guide to Dog Vomit Colors: Yellow, White Foam, and Blood
You wake up in the morning to that unpleasant surprise on the carpet: a yellow stain or a foamy liquid. Why do dogs vomit? Is it always an emergency? From stomach bile (yellow) to serious infections (bloody), the color of vomit can actually give you clear messages about your dog's health. Here's a color guide to help you understand what's going on in your dog's stomach.
Not everything that comes out of the mouth is "vomit." This distinction is crucial:
- Vomiting: The expulsion of food from the stomach with contraction, retching, and effort. It is usually liquid and malodorous.
- Regurgitation: The effortless, non-retching expulsion of undigested food, "like a pipe," immediately after eating. This is usually due to eating too fast or an esophageal issue.
If your dog is only regurgitating food, they might be eating too fast or not liking their food. (See: How to Choose Dog Food?)
If your dog is truly vomiting, the color of the stain on the carpet will tell you the source of the problem. Here are the color codes used by veterinarians.
Table of Contents: Color Guide
1. Yellow or Green Liquid (Bile)
This is the most common situation. The yellow color indicates bile from the stomach.
Cause: Usually "Empty Stomach" syndrome. When your dog goes hungry for a long time, stomach acid builds up and is expelled along with bile. It is typically seen in the mornings.
Solution: Increase the number of meals and reduce portion sizes. Giving a small amount of food before bed can soothe the stomach.
2. White Foam and Salivary Vomit
If your dog vomits something like shaving cream or egg whites:
- Upset Stomach: It could be simple indigestion.
- Kennel Cough: If the vomiting is accompanied by a severe cough/honking sound, this is a respiratory infection.
- Bloat: If your dog tries to vomit but only produces foam and their abdomen is distended, this is an emergency (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus).
3. Brown or Undigested Food
If the vomit is brown and foul-smelling, there are two possibilities:
- It is digested food (could indicate a bowel obstruction).
- They ate feces (unfortunately, dogs do this).
If you see undigested food particles, your dog may have a food intolerance or allergy. To check for allergy symptoms, you can refer to our article Why Is My Dog Scratching? (Food Allergy).
4. Red or Black (Emergency!)
Red: Means fresh blood. There is active bleeding in the mouth, esophagus, or stomach.
Black (Coffee Grounds): Means digested blood. It is a sign of a stomach ulcer or serious internal bleeding. You should go to the vet immediately.
5. Grass and Foreign Objects
Dogs eat grass to induce vomiting when their stomach is upset. Seeing grass in vomit is usually not concerning.
However, if you see plastic pieces, socks, or toy fragments in the vomit, your dog may have "Pica Syndrome" (the disease of eating foreign objects). We have explained the reasons for this behavior in detail in our article Pica Syndrome and Eating Foreign Objects.
Conclusion: Single episodes of vomiting are usually harmless, but vomiting that lasts longer than 24 hours or is accompanied by lethargy requires a vet visit. While closely monitoring your dog's health, always keep an updated Tagicons tag on their collar for immediate identification in case of an emergency.
